Announcing the Inaugural Professor Garry Egger Scholarship Recipient
As the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine (ASLM) marks its 10th year and celebrates two decades of Lifestyle Medicine in Australasia, we are proud to share a milestone moment for our community.
We are delighted to announce Amanda Roberts as the inaugural recipient of the Professor Garry Egger Scholarship, a program established to honour one of the true pioneers of Lifestyle Medicine and to support practitioners delivering care where it is needed most.
Honouring Professor Garry Egger
Professor Garry Egger is synonymous with Lifestyle Medicine in Australasia. His pioneering work reshaped how we understand and address the root causes of chronic disease, inspiring generations of health professionals to move beyond symptom management toward prevention, equity, and whole-person care.
While Garry has recently retired due to ill health, his vision continues to guide ASLM and the broader Lifestyle Medicine movement. This scholarship ensures his legacy lives on through practitioners committed to improving health outcomes in communities across Australasia.
The inaugural Professor Garry Egger Scholarship was presented on Saturday 6 December at the Sydney Networking & Celebration Evening, part of the 2025 Lifestyle Medicine Roadshow. Garry’s wife, Sharon, and his son, Tyler, joined us to announce the recipient, a powerful reminder that this scholarship is not only about education, but about carrying forward a legacy.
Introducing the Inaugural Recipient: Dr Amanda Roberts
Dr Amanda Roberts’ dedication to remote, rural, and Indigenous health embodies the very spirit of Lifestyle Medicine and the values this scholarship seeks to uphold.
Reflecting on the award, Dr Roberts shared:
“This is truly wonderful news and I’m deeply honoured. Thank you for recognising the work being done in our remote and rural communities, and for offering this support as I continue to grow in Lifestyle Medicine. It is an extraordinary encouragement, and I’m very grateful.”
– Dr Amanda Roberts
Scholarship Recipient
We are thrilled to recognise Dr Roberts and look forward to seeing the impact this opportunity will have on her practice and the communities she serves.
Living the Values at the Heart of the Scholarship
Dr Amanda Roberts was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Professor Garry Egger Scholarship for her longstanding commitment to delivering equitable, preventative healthcare in communities facing significant disadvantage.
A GP, Clinical Lead, and Practice Owner, Dr Roberts has worked extensively across Far North Queensland, including with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, in regional and remote general practice, and through the development of a social initiative that has since grown into a charitable organisation focused on healthcare for people experiencing homelessness. Her work consistently centres on reaching those who face barriers to accessing care due to geography, disadvantage, or social circumstances.
Dr Roberts supervises registrars in MM2 and MM6 locations and mentors early-career doctors, helping build workforce capacity in areas where medical resources are often stretched thin. Through outreach services and innovative models of care, her practice supports individuals who would otherwise struggle to engage with the health system, including those affected by chronic disease, long wait times, and limited access to specialist services.
Her passion for Lifestyle Medicine is deeply personal. Having lost her mother to two preventable diseases, Dr Roberts brings both professional insight and lived experience to her work. She is a strong advocate for whole-person, preventative care, focused on empowering patients, reducing medication burden where appropriate, and addressing the modern lifestyle factors that contribute to long years of ill health.
Through the scholarship, Dr Roberts plans to further integrate Lifestyle Medicine into her clinical practice, registrar teaching, and outreach work, with a particular focus on marginalised communities, peri-menopausal health, and paediatric care. Her approach closely aligns with ASLM’s mission to advance evidence-based Lifestyle Medicine through multidisciplinary, community-focused care, and reflects the courage, prevention focus, and equity that defined Professor Garry Egger’s life’s work.
