Member spotlight – Meet Dr Melanie Lau – Radiologist, Internationally Board Certified Lifestyle Medicine Physician and ASLM Fellow

ASLM Member Spotlights showcase the invaluable work that ASLM Fellows, Board Certified Professionals and member ambassadors are doing to establish Lifestyle Medicine as central to health, healthcare and health policy. ASLM members represent a broad range of medical and health practitioners as well as passionate professionals working in health and wellbeing who believe that and interdisciplinary and lifestyle-centric approach should be considered when it comes to the prevention and management of chronic and lifestyle-related disease.

What is your background?

I serve as a medical specialist in the field of Radiology at multiple private clinics located in the suburban regions. My range of expertise spans reporting x-rays, mammograms, ultrasounds, CT, and MRI scans, in addition to performing musculoskeletal pain relief injections and biopsies.

How did you come to Lifestyle Medicine?

As a health professional, my interests have grown beyond traditional medicine. My general practitioner pointed me towards the Lifestyle Medicine Society, having noticed my keen interest in plant-based diets. This led me on an enlightening journey, and, as the saying goes, the rest is history.

Why did you choose the ASLM Fellowship?

Having earned a Fellowship in Radiology, I felt a calling to attain a similar standing in Lifestyle Medicine. Many of my peers have a hard time understanding the profound impact lifestyle modifications can make on overall health. To converse with authority on the subject and enhance my credibility, I pursued and obtained the Fellowship in Lifestyle Medicine.

How has, or how do you envisage ASLM Fellowship influencing your career/direction?

While carrying out procedures, I take the opportunity to educate my patients about Lifestyle Medicine. I discuss their diets, motivate them to engage in physical activities, and recommend them to associated healthcare professionals, such as dieticians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and exercise physiologists. This holistic approach complements the procedures I perform. I have implemented Lifestyle Medicine approaches with several patients and had excellent outcomes rivalling those of traditional medicine, such as marked reduction in cholesterol, blood pressure; also weight loss, reduced endometriosis symptoms and improvement in acne. Looking forward, I plan to collaborate with fellow practitioners from other medical fields such as cardiology and oncology, aiming to integrate Lifestyle Medicine into their patient care routines.

Any advice for members considering ASLM Fellowship enrolment?

My advice to those in the pursuit of knowledge: absorb all you can. The digital age offers a wealth of resources – podcasts, online courses, and a multitude of other information. However, caution must be exercised to ensure the information you consume is rooted in evidence-based medicine. Pursue learning in areas that pique your interest, whether that’s nutrition, exercise, mental health, or any other segment of Lifestyle Medicine. The ultimate goal is to leverage this knowledge to help others embrace lifestyle changes that could greatly improve their wellbeing. Returning to the world of exams might seem daunting, especially if you’ve already climbed that mountain before. But, trust me, it’s an enlightening journey that not only enriches your professional life but your personal one as well.

Tell us a random fact about yourself

At home, my household is bustling and busy. I am the proud mother to four children and a step-mother to another. I share my home with four lively mini schnauzers, who never fail to keep my husband and I on our feet… or should I say, on our paws!
